SEF - The West Coast Files

Since Tuesday, Nancy and I have been businesswomen on a mission.  We ventured across the country to Los Angeles for The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard Music for Film and TV Conference.  For 2 days we sat in on panel discussions with some of the industry's brightest and most successful composers, music supervisors and producers, hoping to learn from their experiences and make some connections.  My producer, Assaf was also in town for the conference; it was fun to see him out of the studio.  Some highlights of the conference include: panels with composer, Marc Streitenfeld and songwriter, Diane Warren; recognizing Christopher Farrell who we recently met at CMJ; the opening night party; running not 1, but 3 of my University of Miami alumni and receiving many compliments on my cover art and album title!

Since the conference Nancy and I have been adventuring around the city ... more on that to come!

Would you light my Kindle?

I am an avid reader.  I read in bed, on the subway, on airplanes, in waiting rooms, even walking down the street (although, I don't recommend that, I've walked into things several times before).  Sometimes carrying books around all day can be unwieldy, or I might be in bed and too tired to turn the page but I HAVE to finish a chapter.  Well, Amazon.com has come up with an amazing piece of technology, the Kindle, that solves these problems and more! The Kindle is a wireless reading device that allows you to download books, magazines, newspapers and blogs in minutes so you can take them on-the-go. Sarah made this awesome discovery and I think it might be her best yet!  We're both Kindle owners now and couldn't be happier.

I know what you're thinking, how could you just turn your back on a book?  I love feeling the pages beneath my fingers, but for someone who's always in transit, like myself and many other New Yorkers, this device allows my already oversized bag to be that much lighter.  Which is important.  I'll always have actual books in my life, I intend on having a library when I own a house, a big one.  For now though, the more I can consolidate, the better.

My First American Brown Trout

Well it wasn't the biggest brown trout you will ever see, but the main thing was that I managed to catch one of America's finest fresh water fish. The location of this achievement was on the Mianus River, 40 miles from Manhattan. The river begins life in Westchester County, passing through the Mianus River Gorge before entering Fairfield County, Connecticut and eventually into the Long Island Sound. The Mianus River Gorge was where my friend Ed and I spent this past Sunday doing a spot of fly fishing. Ed kindly lent me his gear which included some waders so we could get out to the good spots on the water. We wandered upstream in the most lush surroundings of the river gorge, stopping to fish where we thought that the trout would be lurking. On the way, Ed caught a native snake, we had lunch by an old campfire, and then when dusk was upon us, we found the perfect place in the river where Ed hooked a lean river carp and I caught my speckled monster.

The fish is only about 2 years old, I put it back, and it happily swam away to continue it's life in the river.

Worm Composting October 2008 Update

Worm composting has gone sooooo well!  I was nervous and felt like I was diving head first into the future of environmentalism by having 1,000 worms in my composter housed in my coat closet eating my vegetable scraps. But, I tell you what, these worms are so happy.  They eat like crazy, and I'm pretty sure they're mating.  Some day they will reach 20,000 and then control their own population.  Control their own population!  I love nature!

I fed them way too much the other day (it's just so tempting to throw in an extra handful of food!), but only a very small smell surfaced because they couldn't eat the food fast enough.  You could only smell it if you went into the closet and opened the lid to the composter.  The smell went away in a couple of days.  They seem to really love the avocado shells.  Dave always says, "They're having a party in that avocado shell!"

I'm going to try to feed them coffee grounds and egg shells.  I've been giving them tea bags, and they eat those up fast.  I'm now ready to say, EVERYONE SHOULD GET ONE!  Unless you go out of town for more than three weeks at a time, or never eat a vegetable, then you need a worm composter and some happy red worms!

I was so excited that my mom asked for one for Christmas.  I've now officially convinced one person to get one!
